liquified petroleum gas

What is liquified petroleum gas?

Liquefied petroleum gas (lpg or lp gas), is a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases used as fuel in heating appliances, cooking equipment, and vehicles.

Lpg is an efficient, portable, clean, versatile and accessible energy source. Lpg is a clean burning fuel that provides smoke free indoor cooking and can also help reduce outdoor and urban air pollution.

There are more than 1,000 applications of lpg. Hundreds of millions of people currently use lpg and depend on it for thousands of applications, in commercial business, industry, transportation, farming, power generation, cooking, heating and for recreational purposes.

LPG Refills

Is LPG safe to use?

Even though considered stable and safe, lpg still possesses a certain degree of danger, just like any type of fuel and all safety practices must be followed. The most common types of hazards associated with the use of it include explosions, fire and inhaling carbon monoxide.

The source of these risks usually are:

  • Poor hose connections
  • Damaged or corroded cylinders/inadequate maintenance. Never refill or use a rusty cylinder.
  • Placing a cylinder near a source of heat
  • Incorrect storage of the cylinder. Always ensure adequate ventilation.

When gas does not burn properly or is used in an area without adequate ventilation, it produces excess carbon monoxide (co) – a colourless, odourless gas. When inhaled, carbon monoxide binds to the haemoglobin in the blood. This reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen, starving the body of oxygen and poisoning it.

Why is my LPG price fluctuating monthly?

Similar to petrol, diesel and paraffin, lpg is also subject to monthly price adjustments, as determined by the department of energy (doe), and is based on local and international factors. Those prices are also dependent on the location in which you purchase the gas in. South Africa has lpg zones, each with its own slightly different price level.

How do i know if my LP gas cylinder is empty?

One way is to weigh smaller gas cylinders. The empty (or tare) weight is printed on the neck of the cylinder. Disconnect the gas cylinder, ensuring the valve is properly closed, and place it on a scale. The difference between the scale reading and the tare weight will tell you how much gas is left in the cylinder.

What do i do if i suspect a gas leak?

LPG, in cylinders or tanks, has a distinctive smell added to enable you to clearly detect a leak. Never ignore a leak. promptly take the following action:

  • Firstly, if in any doubt, call Jayson’s gas on 031 4021047 or 0843999652
  • Turn off the gas at the tank(s) or cylinder(s).
  • In the case of indoor cylinders or cylinders in a small enclosed yard, disconnect the cylinder and remove to an open (outdoor) space.
  • For indoor leaks, to disperse the gas, open all windows and doors to the outside. Avoid sources of ignition – no smoking, do not turn electrical switches on or off.
  • For large outdoor leaks (i.e. where there is a smell of gas more than a few feet from the source), keep people, vehicles and ignition sources away. If necessary, cordon off the area and/or have someone stay there to control access.
  • In the case of fire, immediately call the fire brigade on 10177 or 112
